Bullet Journals

So I'm kind of fascinated with bullet journals. Do you know what they are? They're lists, essentially, in a journal, but people add stuff like stars that they color in when they reach a goal, they keep track of books they read and movies they watch and if they eat home or out.

Now, I love a good list. I'd be lost without my weekly list on the refrigerator with my menu and chores and other important events. I also have a 4-month calendar in the kitchen with big events, color coded by writing, school and home. AND I have a calendar on my computer where I keep track of writing goals and writing tasks and school stuff. So a part of me really wonders if a bullet journal would help me, if I could transition to it instead of all these other things, or if it would just overwhelm me and I'd never open it.

Plus, it looks like setting one up takes a lot of time, time I could use on other things.

Do you have one? How do you keep organized?

I do have a bullet journal. When I started, there was too much overlap between my electronic calendar and my planner. I've pared out the duplication. I started with Shannon Stacey's recommendations and modified from there. http://shannonstacey.com/2016/05/how-i-bullet-journal-in-a-travelers-notebook/

What I've found is I don't need the calendar pieces. I have that well-covered in my phone and planner. If you like coloring in a spare moment, Yellow Paper House has some cool traveler's journal size coloring books. I tuck my short 12-pack of colored pencils in the back pocket. I don't find a color much, but it's kind of neat to have them.

I keep three styles of Moleskine Cahiers journals in the book. One plain, one lined, and one grid. I also keep an assorted 8 pack package of Pilot G2 pens tucked into the journal.

This, my planner, and my phone calendar (etc) gives me everything I need for a mobile office and brainstorming capability.

I do have one of those travelers notebooks and some color gel pens. I might try to set it up, just to see. We have a faculty meeting today, so I'll be doodling, anyway, lol! Interesting not to use the calendar aspect.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by what you keep track of? I guess that's up to the individual, but some of these I've seen are pretty detailed.

Remember, it needs to serve YOUR needs. If it doesn't, modify it. Also remember, the people who blog about them make the entries specifically to look gorgeous on the blog. They are not necessarily their daily entries (most will state this somewhere).

I’m not a great artist. Mine looks like a toddler got in there and started scribbling. Yellow Paper House on Etsy has some great pre-printed inserts. They're worth looking at to see if any call to you. Also, if you don’t already use a planner you love, it's a great idea to incorporate the calendar into this. I started doing that, and I wound up trying to keep my calendar in three places. Which is pretty much the definition of insanity.
